I don’t think that the idea behind Royal is an inherently bad idea (Caligula has a very similar idea and I think handles it very well) but the execution here is awful with very far too many questionable morals that never get addressed. And no matter how hard Atlus tries to insert new scenes, the Royal content is a subplot until the very end of the game, so it just isn't going to feel like the natural conclusion the game was building towards.

It amazes me that after forgetting to make Haru a character, they chose not to fix this in Royal but to add another character who joins the group even later instead.

Kazumi sucks and maruki is cool, before the new part where he it all just becomes super galaxy brained nonsense that isnt even consistentĬlick to shrink.I really wish Atlus would stop doing rereleases that just tack on an extra story (Royal is the worst in this respect for outright replacing the final act of the game) when there are plenty of rough areas in the original game’s stories that would benefit from being rethought instead. Royal has some solid Qol improvements but thats about it. Ryuji is great and its a huge dis-service to his character and all the characters frankly what they do to them to the last half of the game, reducing them to mere talking heads to all say the same obvious thing. The only arc of 5 that is honestly great is kamoshida and it sucks the game has such an excellenet start to then descind into stupidity The story of persona 5 ends up being pretty terrible and the random sidestep away from the messaging of the main game only confuses the ending message and doesnt build up on it. The party memebers get shamed randomly for enjoying their lives not being hell and weirdly apologize you for no reason and then kasumi who the whole thing is cenetred around also randomly gets over her whole problem in effectively one day, because you have to be able to date her. The concept that the villian of Royal focuses on is not something new to story telling and they handle it a really weird and not well written way. What the thieves are doing comapred to maruki are extremely different The game also really doesnt even explore or expand on these themes in any meaningful ways. What they do is 100x time better than the majority of the prison systems and rehabilitation systems that exist in the world, that focus more on revenge rather than justice. They are able to effectively make people better through a pain-less process that doesn't involve people being imprisioned for many of their years and its proven effective.

Their isnt any actually ambiguity to what the phantom thieves do, like full stop. I did pick up on the heavy-handed importance of Maruki's character to get nudged into maxing out his confidant, but it's not reasonable to expect EVERYONE to do that or expect them to research the game so specifically, especially if they haven't played P5 Vanilla.

I personally hate researching and looking into this stuff because I'm a huge spoilerphobe, and there's no reason to assume while playing the game that you're going to be locked out of the new content if you don't do things correctly (I was actually expecting the new content to occur before the Normal ending anyway, perhaps before the 7th Palace). Even if you did keep an extra save to keep you from replaying the whole game again, that's still an absurd amount of content to replay. Plus, you're probably a dozen or so hours past the "point of no return" of getting the Royal ending if, for example, you missed maxing out of the necessary confidants and got the normal ending instead. This would be different if this was some 8-12 hour long game, but this is SO far outside that.

Folks research games to find out what they're generally like and if they're appealing to them, NOT to figure out how to unlock hidden endings and content that justify a purchase.
